10 Interesting facts about Earth Day

Every year 22nd April is dedicated to the celebrations of Earth Day at least to 2015. This year PATT participated officially for the first time. PATT has joined the  Billion Acts of Greenand have pledge their tree planting to the campaign….  PATT has planted 2890 trees towards Earth Day 2012 in their Khao Yai project. Earth day is held annually and its goal is to increase awareness and appreciation of  natural environment.

1) Earth Day celebrations:

The founder´s name is John McConnell and it was first mentioned in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. The founder picked the 22nd April himself and in 2009 United Nations designated this day to International Mother earth Day.

2) Recycling the Newspaper:

In order to help our environment we should start small  – why not start recycling newspaper? For example 30% of Sunday newspaper is recycled and if the figure is increased to 100% we could save 250 million trees a year.

3) Recycling the water:

When we recycle paper and we want to reach another level start recycling water. In the past 32% of water was recycled and nowadays 75% is recycled which is a considerable improvement.

4) Earth Day history

The first celebration was in 1969 and 20, 000, 000 Americans participated.  The popularity of this day now spreads around the world. Based on the earth day facts, 200,000,000 people celebrated it in 1990 and more than one billion in 2012

5) Recycle cans

Aluminum is a sustainable metal and can be recycled over and over again. A can is generally turned into a new can and back on store shelves within 60 days. Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough electricity to power a TV set for 3 hours, light bulb usage (20 hours) or using computer (180 minutes). Making cans from recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy than making them from scratch. This represents a huge reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and help combat climate change!

What does Earth Day mean for you? It is effortless to participate and its worldwide. Recycle your plastic shopping bags. In Thailand when you go shopping carry your own bag with you and this action would reduce the impact on the Earth.

Energy consumption is reduced by recycling. About 35% of municipal solid waste (before recycling) by weight is paper and paper products. Recycling causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making virgin paper.
