10 Interesting facts about the Earth

   

1. ATMOSPHERE

It has many layers but only one can support life – it is the closest to the planet itself – troposphere. This layer is the thinnest from all measuring only 16km.

   

2. WATER

The earth is the only planet in the solar system which has water in 3 forms. Water is the most important ingredient for life.

   

3.  AGE

Earth might be 5 billion years old but life is present for only last 150-200 million years.

   

4. DESERTS

We might think that that they only contain sand but that would not be the truth but 85% of them are made of rocks and gravel.

Sahara is the biggest and is 1/3 of the continent (making it as big as USA)

   

5. PACKAGE

Earth and Mercury are the two most dense (particles are packed as close as possible to each other) planets in the Solar System.

   

6. ORBIT AROUND THE SUN

It take 365 and 1/4 days to orbit around the Sun, the quarter day is not counted at the end of each year but every four years an extra day is added – 29th February.  The next occurrence would be in 2016.

   

7. OCEANS

If we could evaporate all the water from the oceans and use the salt to cover the land surface we would have 500 foot layer of coating everywhere.

   

8. TIME

It is believed that the Earth is slowing down and every few years an extra second is added to make up for lost time. Millions of years ago, a day on Earth was 20 hours long and in millions of years a day will be 27 hours long.

   

9. NAME

The Earth is the only planet in the Solar System not to be named after a mythical god.

   

10. SHAKY GROUND

The Earth is the only known planet in the Solar System to be geologically active. Earthquakes and volcanoes form the landscape , replenishing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and erase craters from meteors.   There are about 1 million earthquakes a year luckily only fraction of them are catastrophic and deadly.
